On World Brain Day, SYNTHIA joins the global community in raising awareness of brain health and the need to advance research into neurological diseases.

As populations age, Alzheimer's disease continues to affect millions of people worldwide, placing an increasing burden on patients, families, healthcare systems, and society. Accelerating research into earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments has never been more important. Within SYNTHIA, one of our six use cases focuses on exploring how synthetic data can help overcome some of the key challenges in Alzheimer's disease research while protecting patient privacy.


Supporting Earlier Diagnosis Through Synthetic Data


 

Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia, yet changes in the brain often begin years before symptoms become visible. Detecting the disease during these early stages remains challenging due to its complexity, the need for multiple diagnostic tests, and limited access to large, high-quality datasets.

The SYNTHIA Alzheimer's disease use case investigates how synthetic data can support the development of more accurate predictive models by combining imaging, fluid biomarkers, genetics, and cognitive assessments. By enabling researchers to safely access realistic synthetic datasets, SYNTHIA aims to improve AI and machine learning models that can distinguish between different stages of cognitive decline, supporting earlier diagnosis and more informed clinical decision-making.


Enabling Better Clinical Research

Beyond diagnosis, SYNTHIA is also investigating how synthetic data can improve the way Alzheimer's clinical research is conducted. Researchers are exploring whether synthetic patient cohorts generated from longitudinal studies can serve as realistic external control arms for clinical trials. This approach has the potential to reduce reliance on placebo groups, improve trial efficiency, and accelerate the evaluation of promising new therapies. In parallel, SYNTHIA is exploring how synthetic data can augment MRI and PET imaging to improve brain-age prediction, lesion detection, disease progression monitoring, and assessment of treatment effects.

By combining privacy-preserving synthetic data generation with advanced AI and multimodal healthcare data, SYNTHIA aims to demonstrate how synthetic data can contribute to earlier diagnosis, more efficient clinical trials, and more personalised treatment strategies for Alzheimer's disease.
