SYNTHIA as part of the HealthData4EU Collective, participated in EBDVF 2025 Advancing trust and innovation through synthetic health data

At the European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) 2025, the HealthData4EU Collective took centre stage in a timely and forward-looking conversation on one of healthcare’s most transformative enablers: synthetic health data. Bringing together leading voices from healthcare, research, and technology, the forum offered a vibrant space to explore how artificial data generation can open new pathways for scientific discovery, clinical innovation, and cross-border collaboration, while upholding Europe’s core values of privacy and trust.
The HealthData4EU Collective is a growing alliance of EU-funded initiatives, united by a shared ambition to dismantle data silos and make health data accessible, secure, and interoperable across Europe.
The collective brings together AISYM4MED, SECURED, FLUTE, SYNTHEMA, PHASE IV AI, PHEMS, and IHI-SYNTHIA, and recently welcomed IHI-SEARCH as its newest member, further reinforcing the collective commitment to collaboration and innovation.

During a joint session at EBDVF25, experts from AISYM4MED, SECURED, FLUTE, and SYNTHIA shared concrete examples of how synthetic data is already reshaping healthcare.
SYNTHIA presented its integrated approach to generating and validating synthetic datasets for clinical trials and regulatory alignment. AISYM4MED demonstrated controllable workflows for creating tailored datasets, with a strong focus on imbalanced data and rare diseases. SECURED highlighted how privacy-preserving technologies, including homomorphic encryption and secure multiparty computation, enable data collaboration without exposing sensitive information. FLUTE showcased its federated learning models for prostate cancer diagnosis, reducing unnecessary biopsies and improving patient outcomes.
Beyond technical advances, the discussions emphasised the human dimension of innovation. Synthetic data emerged not merely as a technological solution, but as a bridge between progress and trust, allowing researchers and clinicians to work with high-quality data while safeguarding patient privacy. As one speaker noted, “Synthetic data allows us to move forward without sacrificing the values that matter most in healthcare.”
SYNTHIA was representedy by partners:
- Serena Elizabeth Marshall, DNV, as session presenter and
- Matthias Müllenborn, NovoNordisk, as session chair and moderator

While challenges remain, including ethical approvals, data access agreements, and the need for standardised quality metrics, the vision of the collective is clear. HealthData4EU aims to help define gold standards for synthetic data, accelerate adoption through open-source tools, and build sustainable infrastructures that serve both science and society. By embracing synthetic data, Europe is laying the foundation for a future where personalised medicine, AI-driven diagnostics, and secure data sharing are not aspirations, but realities. The HealthData4EU Cluster is committed to being part of this change.
